Bringing live video game–inspired jazz to the Triangle and beyond, the Turnabout Players are a pillar in the local gaming community. In this hour-long jam, they play classic video game hits spanning the past four decades. Join us at the NCMA Games Together gaming festival and relive your favorite gaming soundtracks or find new ones!

NCMA Games Together

The NCMA hosts its first gaming festival, bringing together game enthusiasts from all walks of life to celebrate the artistry and spirit of gaming that enriches lives in many creative ways. The day is jam-packed with gaming activities and local vendors. Programs include a talk with Jacob Geller, author of How a Game Lives, video game–inspired jazz from the Turnabout Players, an introductory workshop to Dungeons & Dragons with Nick Scarff, and a movie screening of Street Fighter (1994). Activities feature playtests with local indie game developers and plenty of play tables to try out tabletop games and challenge other players. Come spend the day with us learning new ways to play and ignite your creativity!

Introduction to Dungeons & Dragons with Nick Scarff

Have you ever wanted to play Dungeons & Dragons but don’t know where to start? Does the amount of text and information feel overwhelming? Look no further! In this two-hour introductory workshop with local Dungeon Master Nick Scarff, participants receive clear and simple instructions to start their tabletop role-playing game adventures. After picking out a character template and corresponding miniature figure, players learn all the core components of D&D, including navigating a character sheet, role playing, using magical abilities, and handling battle scenarios. No experience or supplies required. We just need you and your imagination!

How a Game Lives: Author Talk with Jacob Geller

Over his illustrious career, Jacob Geller has written and produced a sprawling collection of video essays. Deftly interweaving video game analysis with complex narratives about art, politics, and history, Geller’s work positions games as vital tools for understanding each other and ourselves. In this hour-long talk, Geller reads selections from his recent book, How a Game Lives, an anthology of his video essays.
