In Motion, In Time: Casting Crowns: Frankie Lee III Interprets Basquiat

2:00 PM

Overview

Join us as Frankie Lee III presents the next performance in our In Motion, In Time dance series. Casting Crowns is a multidisciplinary dance work inspired by the visual language and enduring legacy of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Through movement, projected imagery, sound, and improvisation, the performance explores the crowns we inherit, create, and carry, which are symbols of identity, resilience, imagination, and recognition.

Drawing from Basquiat’s layered compositions, the dance work blurs the boundaries between body and canvas, inviting audiences into a living painting where gesture becomes mark making and movement becomes memory. As crowns are celebrated, questioned, and ultimately released, Casting Crowns reflects on what remains when legacy transcends fame and art becomes an offering beyond time.

About In Motion, In Time
Partnering with local and regional university and community choreographers and dance ensembles, the NCMA presents original, commissioned dance performances in concert with exhibitions. Interpreting each show, these performances create new entry points for audiences to engage with exhibitions through the language of dance.
