Throughout our history the North Carolina Museum of Art has reimagined the art museum experience. Today, we are committed to expanding the Museum’s impact for all. Join us as we launch the public phase of our $75 million campaign to support campus upgrades, education, programming, operations, and more throughout the state.
As we look ahead to the future of the NCMA, we see incredible opportunities to deepen our engagement with the communities we serve. Reimagining the Possible invites our audiences to experience the Museum in new ways, extend our offerings to even more North Carolina citizens, and sustain our cultural and natural resources for generations to come.

Our Vision

Reimagine the Arts

We strive to forge a distinctive artistic path that honors excellence, innovation, and multiple perspectives in our collection, programs, and initiatives. With your help we can continue to support North Carolina–based artists, the collection, and temporary and site-specific works.

Arts initiatives include:

  • Art acquisitions to continue building the permanent collection and expanding representation of artists, narratives, and mediums
  • Establishment of a Collection Care Endowment Fund to support care, preservation, conservation, preparation, and storage of works in the NCMA’s collection
  • Artist residencies and commissions to create temporary and site-specific artwork
  • Groundbreaking Initiative for Jewish Art and Culture devoted to celebrating Jewish heritage and interfaith dialogue through programming, education, and scholarship

Reimagine the Connection

We endeavor to create authentic and welcoming experiences to engage a broader audience. With your support we can continue to serve all 100 North Carolina counties and enrich the lives of thousands of schoolchildren and educators.

Connection initiatives include:

  • New and expanded educational outreach programming in classrooms and communities across the state, with an emphasis on serving K–12 students, educators, teens, and college students
  • Expansion of paid internship programs to encourage the pursuit of museum careers and increase diversity across museum professions

Reimagine the Campus

We seek to advance an ambitious campus plan that prioritizes the visitor experience, accessibility, and environmental sustainability. With your support we can create physical spaces that are incubators of dynamic programming and outreach, social connection, and community engagement.

Campus initiatives include:

  • Capital projects in Raleigh that center on East Building—the original heart and soul of the NCMA—and that transform different parts of the campus into vibrant, interactive spaces that invite more people to experience the Museum in different ways. Projects in East Building will convert the lower level and back entrance into beautiful, multipurpose spaces and open the world of art conservation to the public. Outside, renovations of the Joseph M. Bryan, Jr., Theater in the Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park in Raleigh will improve accessibility, comfort, and the visitor experience.
  • Restoration of the stream system and other natural areas in the Museum Park to build climate resilience, increase environmental awareness, and improve visitor experience.
  • Extensive renovations in Winston-Salem that further solidify the NCMA W-S as the center for contemporary art and programming in North Carolina. Projects will improve accessibility throughout the historic Hanes House and update the infrastructure for additional community and outreach programs, exhibitions, and performances.

Reimagine the Impact

Donors who make unrestricted gifts give the Museum flexibility and capacity to address unanticipated needs. Without your generous support, the Museum would not be able to continue providing world-class programs and exhibitions to the citizens of North Carolina and beyond. The NCMArts Fund, Impact Fund, and exhibition sponsorship are three essential avenues for unrestricted annual support—to sustain the momentum and growth for generations to come.
