The North Carolina Museum of Art

Internships

The North Carolina Museum of Art offers internships to qualified undergraduate and graduate students that provide unique opportunities for professional growth and development within a museum setting. In addition, the Museum benefits from the work and contributions made by the intern toward the goals and daily activities of the Museum. Internships are non-compensated, but students gain valuable experience working at the Museum and may be able to earn educational credits for their work.

Who is eligible?

Internships are open to current and rising college juniors and seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students. Although it is not generally required that interns have an art or art history major, Museum departments may individualize their requirements according to their needs. Eligibility varies for each internship term.

How do I apply?

Submit the following materials in a single package:

  • Cover letter, including your first and second Museum department preferences.
  • Two letters of recommendation, preferably from a professor or professional reference. If necessary, in the interest of time, these MAY be e-mailed with subject line “reference letter for internship applicant xxx=your name.” Allow ample time to request letters of recommendation.
  • Transcript of undergraduate or graduate records. Official and unofficial transcripts are accepted.

All requested materials must be mailed in one envelope by the application deadline. You will receive an e-mail confirmation of receipt of your complete application.

Note that the deadline date refers to the date by which applications must be postmarked. The Museum will not review applications submitted after the deadline date.

What is the application review process?

Applications will begin review after the deadline. Selected applicants will be contacted regarding interviews within approximately three to four weeks after the application deadline. Other applicants will be advised by mail that they have not been selected for interview. Phone interviews are available if you are unable to visit the Museum during this time in person.
