About Venice and the Ottoman Empire
September 28, 2024–January 5, 2025
Through a rich body of works reflecting both Venetian and Ottoman origins, Venice and the Ottoman Empire documents interactions between the two rival Mediterranean states across multiple cultural arenas—political, diplomatic, economic, artistic, technological, and culinary.
Venetian loans are joined by a trove of recently salvaged objects from a major Adriatic shipwreck, the large Venetian merchant ship Gagliana Grossa that sank while traveling from Venice to Istanbul in 1583. These spectacular items have never been exhibited outside Croatia, where the wreck is located.
About Samurai: The Making of a Warrior
October 19, 2024–February 2, 2025
Samurai: The Making of a Warrior invites visitors to consider the original purpose of Japan’s material culture of war and see its connections to history, art, daily life, and politics. The exhibition features samurai arms and armor from an exceptional private collection in Greensboro, NC, displayed alongside visually compelling cultural objects, offering a more nuanced view of samurai life and history. Also included in this exhibition is a discussion about samurai women, who were often key to successful samurai families and played significant—if largely hidden—roles in the careers of famous male samurai leaders.
