The NCMA and Cat’s Cradle present Watchhouse (formerly Mandolin Orange) with Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves
The local duo founded by Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz rose to ascendancy as new flagbearers of the contemporary folk world, sweetly singing soft songs about the hardest parts of our lives, both as people and as a people. From meeting at a bluegrass jam at Carrboro’s Armadillo Grill and playing all the local coffee shops early on to selling out venues like the Ryman Auditorium and Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the group has kept their roots firmly grounded in the Triangle.
This show at the NCMA is special for two reasons—it’s their only local play in 2022, and it’s an intimate duo set. Over the years their recordings and band have grown to include friends and heroes, but the core remains Andrew and Emily. This will be on full display and in celebration at this special hometown show.
About Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves
For master musicians Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves, traditional banjo and fiddle music is a way to interpret our uncertain times, to draw artistic inspiration and power from the sources of meaning in their lives. History, family, literature, live performance, and environmental instability all manifest in the sounds, feelings, and sensations that permeate their music. Their 2022 sophomore album, Hurricane Clarice, is a direct infusion of centuries of matrilineal folk wisdom, a fiery breath of apocalyptic energy.
