The Fundamentals of Painting with Peter Marin

This six-part course introduces the student to the practice of painting by examining the fundamental languages of painting: line/edge, form, value, color, and composition. In two gallery lectures instructor Peter Marin acquaints participants with the People’s Collection; students explore a diverse range of works on display, which will be used to illustrate the lessons. The course also includes studio time and take-home assignments.

Any wet medium is welcome. No experience is required. Supplies for this class are not included; students will be responsible for bringing their own materials.

Materials list
Acrylic paints: black, white, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, cadmium orange (cadmium substitutes are fine), ultramarine blue, any green, dioxazine purple, and any other colors students wish to use
12 × 16–inch disposable neutral gray palette
Assorted palette knives
Rags or paper towels
3 plastic quart containers
18 × 24–inch canvas pad with 20 sheets
Matte medium—low viscosity
Brushes should include at least one of the following: a round in size of your choice from 6–12, a flat in size of your choice from 6–12, and a filbert in size of your choice from 6–12. Any other brushes are fine.
