In this remake of the 1947 film noir classic, Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), a charismatic but secretive wanderer, becomes a carny at a traveling carnival and soon learns the secret of Madame Zeena’s (Toni Collette) mind-reading act. Determined to catapult himself into the limelight and take advantage of his new skills, the deceitful spiritualist convinces the virtuous Molly (Rooney Mara) to join him as his assistant. Together, they con the gullible elite until the enigmatic and mysterious psychiatrist Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett) becomes Carlisle’s most formidable opponent.
