The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). Directed by Jacques Demy, 91 min., NR

This pastel-colored musical drama, in which the dialogue is conveyed through song, tells the story of Geneviève and Guy, two young, star-crossed lovers who find themselves separated by war and Geneviève’s mother. “Jacques Demy and Michel Legrand’s reinvention of the movie musical has tinsel, Technicolor, and a beating, broken heart.” (Slant Magazine)
