35th-Anniversary Screening of School Daze, presented in conjunction with special exhibition Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design

School Daze (1988). Directed by Spike Lee, musical/comedy, 121 min., R

Celebrate 35 years of iconic filmmaker Spike Lee’s offbeat contemporary comedy School Daze, which takes an unforgettable look at Black college life. Amidst gala coronations, football, fraternities, parades, and parties, the characters find themselves caught up in romance and relationships, rituals and rivalries during one outrageous homecoming weekend. With dynamic music, including EU’s hit “Da Butt,” and dance numbers choreographed by Otis Sallid (Fame), the film successfully challenges viewpoints about self-identity and self-esteem.

This screening event is presented in conjunction with special exhibition Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design, which displays more than 60 of Academy Award–winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter’s original garments from films such as Black Panther, Malcolm X, Do The Right Thing, and Coming 2 America. School Daze was Carter’s first collaboration with Lee.
