Mindful Museum: Japanese Tea Ceremony

Please note: There are two identical sessions at 10:30 am and 1 pm—please sign up for only ONE time slot. Space is limited.

Join us for an intimate, traditional Japanese tea ceremony in conjunction with the exhibition Samurai: The Making of a Warrior. This experience is led by experts in chanoyu, “the way of tea,” which has been handed down from generation to generation for over five hundred years in Japan.

Chanoyu is not just the inheritance of a form but has become for many a way to connect with the history of Japan and the Japanese people. During the Sengoku war period of the late 16th century, tea ceremonies became places for secret meetings between samurai and where various negotiations took place. The tea ceremony itself was a samurai interest, and many samurai practiced it. At one time a single tea ceremony utensil was worth as much as a piece of territory.

During the second half of the 19th century, chanoyu using table and stool (ryurei), which suited a more Westernized lifestyle, was introduced to the public. Chanoyu has been passed down for over five hundred years because it has managed to preserve ancient traditions while adapting to styles that are rooted in modern life.

Led by Emiko Suzuki. Ages 12 and up.
