Due to incoming inclement weather, East Building is closed today, Friday, September 30.

Please note: West Building is now closed through October 7, 2022, to complete an exciting reinstallation of the People’s Collection. During this time enjoy free exhibitions on view in East Building, indoor and outdoor events and programming, and the 164-acre Museum Park. We’re excited to welcome visitors back to a new Museum experience starting October 8, 2022. Learn more about the opening weekend celebration.

Memory Is Ritual: An Embodied Dance Featuring the North Carolina Central University Dance Company

In 2021 the North Carolina Museum of Art commissioned the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) dance program to create and perform original choreography that explored rituals of lament, release, and hope. The dance was an extension of The Beautiful Project’s installation at the NCMA, Memory Is Ritual: A Remembrance of Ourselves, part of the exhibition NC Artist Connections.

Performances take place at 11 am, noon, 2 pm, and 3 pm.

After each performance there will be a talkback, or informal discussion with the audience, with the chair of NCCU’s dance department, Dr. Kristi Vincent Johnson, and The Beautiful Project’s creative director, Khayla Deans.

  • 11 am talkback: moderated by Sandra Dubose, motivational speaker/performer
  • Noon talkback: moderated by Sandra Dubose
  • 2 pm talkback: moderated by Carly Prentis Jones, CEO of Artspace/performer
  • 3 pm talkback: moderated by Carly Prentis Jones

This commissioned work is generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
