If you enjoy watching and talking about films, join us for a virtual meeting of the NCMA Film Club! This month’s selection, inspired by Romare Bearden’s New Orleans: Ragging Home, is the documentary film A Tuba to Cuba, which follows the New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band as they travel through Cuba to retrace their musical roots.
We will have two special guests for the discussion. Juan Álamo is an internationally known performer and director of the percussion ensemble at UNC–Chapel Hill. Diego Avilez is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and community organizer who’s also the front man for Latin fusion group Tumbao and cofounder and director of the Oak City Music Collective.
A Tuba to Cuba (2018). Directed by T. G. Herrington, Danny Clinch. 83 min. NR
Members of the New Orleans’ famed Preservation Hall Jazz Band travel through post-embargo Cuba in search of the music that gave birth to New Orleans jazz. A Tuba to Cuba celebrates the universal language of music and challenges us to find commonalities, no matter what country we come from, what language we speak, or what color our skin is.
