Coming to you from the beautiful NCMA galleries we all miss so much, Victoria Scott-Miller of Liberation Station bookstore offers a series of readings and book recommendations for young people and their families, pollinating positivity while using art and literature to build bridges. The first installment of this new monthly program is available on YouTube.
Scott-Miller’s recommendations for Juneteenth:
• Words with Wings: A Treasury of African-American Poetry and Art by Belinda Rochelle
• Freedom over Me by Ashley Bryan
“When I think of Juneteenth and after viewing Stacey Lynn Waddell's piece The Gulf Stream (After Winslow Homer), the first thoughts that come to mind are displacement of freedom, one that is everywhere but nowhere at all, and how celebration ignites an opportunity to reclaim our joy, our hope, and ultimately the displaced freedom. When this is truly found from within, we are able to manifest and harness our wildest dreams, the dreams that are often placed in back pockets or hidden in our minds.”—Victoria Scott-Miller, owner of Liberation Station
Liberation Station is a local independent bookstore in Durham, North Carolina, that believes in making representation accessible and amplifying Black voices. We take a leadership role in the African American community by promoting reading, writing, and cultural awareness as tools to improve self-esteem, self-love, and ultimately our communities by enriching the lives of children. Liberation Station specializes in the pop-up market concept, carrying a vast selection of books written for, by, or about people of the African diaspora. We believe that history was made for you to write your own story.
Victoria Scott-Miller is the owner of Liberation Station. She is an innovator, liberation strategist, and literacy advocate. She believes there is power in the community and creates initiatives that make her fluent in the language of legacy building, generational safekeeping, and historical guardianship. She has worked as a buyer and bookstore manager, with specializations in children's, antiquarian, and rare books. She is a member of the American Bookseller Association and the founder of The Getaway, a program that connects with the hotel industry to provide micro-residencies for published authors of color while building an accessible nationwide platform for people of color throughout the publishing industry to connect with and promote each other.
“As the community begins to change and the narratives, history, and intention are at risk of being rewritten; our goal is to give a child of color an ounce of territory and assurance that they are and will remain the protagonist in their own stories.”—Victoria Scott-Miller, owner of Liberation Station
While the Museum is now open, Museum from Home programming continues, including the new NCMA Virtual Exhibitions Subscription and ongoing virtual events.
