Saul under the Influence of the Evil Spirit, William Story’s marble masterpiece of the deranged first king of Israel, sat forgotten in a stately English country house for 150 years until it was recently acquired by the NCMA. John W. Coffey, deputy director for research, the Jim and Betty Becher Curator of American Art, and curator of Judaic art, discusses the creation of this remarkable statue in Rome, its triumphant exhibition in Dublin, its long sojourn at the Cotswolds manor house, and its arrival in Raleigh. Objects conservator Corey Smith Riley talks about the sometimes-comic cleaning of the grimy monarch and the restoration of a lost toe.

The lecture is followed by a musical performance of selections from Handel’s glorious oratorio Saul .

Support provided by the Abram and Frances Pascher Kanof Lecture Fund.
