Carnival of Souls
(1962) Directed by Herk Harvey. Candace Hilligoss, Frances Feist, Sidney Berger. (78 min.) PG.
The film’s atmosphere and creeping tone, accentuated by a haunting organ score, have influenced horror films from The Sixth Sense to Night of the Living Dead. Church organist Mary, the sole survivor of a car wreck, moves to Utah to begin a new life, but she is haunted by a ghoulish figure known only as The Man. Equal parts eerie and fun, Carnival lingers in the viewer’s mind long after the infamous final shot fades to black.
