We recently asked Leo, age 8, who enjoys art camps at the NCMA, to look at some images from The Energy of Youth: Depicting Childhood in the NCMA’s Photography Collection and share his thoughts.
Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Untitled, circa 1960, printed later, gelatin-silver print, 7 7/16 x 8 5/16 in., North Carolina Museum of Art, Gift of the family of Julian T. Baker Jr. and the Estate of Julian T. Baker Jr.
"I love Leo’s perspective," exhibition curator Jennifer Dasal says, "because it reminds me of one of the goals of this exhibition—to value and showcase the unique perspective of children, and of every individual child. Leo’s comments are thought-provoking, fascinating, smart, funny, and sometimes poignant. His one-of-a-kind viewpoint will color the way I view these works and allow me to see them in a new way—which is what I hope for our visitors, too."
The Energy of Youth runs through April 3, 2016, in the Julian T. Baker Jr. Photography Gallery in East Building. Artists in the free exhibition include Bill Bamberger, Luis Rey Velasco, Sally Mann, David Spear, Barbara Morgan, Margaret Sartor, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Linda Foard Roberts, Erwin Olaf, and Titus Brooks Heagins.
Laurie Evans is an editor at the NCMA.
