Rough-winged swallows showed up again over the pond this weekend. The flock of hooded merganser hens is increasing there, and a southern leopard frog called from the shallows at dusk. March 17-18, 2012

Rainwater made the pond more lovely this weekend. The plantings look complete. You can hear the shrill bleat of the narrowmouth toads along with the calls of gray treefrogs and an occasional bullfrog in the evenings now.

Pond sighting

My husband and I were walking on the trail across the pond wall early this morning and saw an immature Little Blue Heron stalking and feeding in the shallows at the pond edge. These elegant white birds with grayish bills and legs are dispersing from their breeding colonies at this time of year.
