After a few years’ break from volunteer work, I began to feel the spirit rising again last summer. I had volunteered with a lot of school and community groups, but this time I wanted to do something completely different. Now I wanted to follow my bliss. So I became a volunteer at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
Some people like to volunteer in areas that are totally different from their day job. I took the opposite approach. The Volunteer News, a newsletter written by and for volunteers at the Museum, seemed a good fit for my journalism background. My first assignment: a personal perspective piece on the Julie Mehretu exhibition. Whoa… I accepted, but not without some trepidation, as contemporary art is one area where the spirit was willing but the confidence was lacking. But to my mind, the best volunteer experiences are ones that stretch you and challenge your abilities.
This spring I have taken on an additional role at the Museum: Communications Intern. And now I am being stretched again, with my very first blog post.
