I had a feeling it was a film of some type and then "Googled" Lumisty and came up with a number of window tinting companies that use it for both commercial and residential purposes.

As I thought it's first use as a graphics material was for the Japanese designer Issey Miyake in the late 1980's which is when I first saw it in SoHo on his showroom windows and almost tripped walking by, I was so amazed! Website listed below gives a nice description of the product and original uses.

http://www.eltongroup.com/lumisty

Another site that gives a good description.
http://www.coolglazeltd.co.uk/lumisty.htm

This is probably a material that requires professional installation and I would imagine its not inexpensive.

Eureka ! We have an answer.
As both Eric and I thought, it is not lenticular glass. It's actually a directional film placed on the vitrine. Curators and designers at Liverpool were kind enough to reply to my e-mail. Apparently, this is called "Lumisty View Control Film."

Believe it or not, this question is currently circling the globe for an answer. Caroline and our exhibition design team are on a mission to find out exactly what sort of glass they used. Stay tuned.

When I saw this, I did get close to the vitrine to figure out how this effect was achieved. The pane was smooth on the exterior, but there was something on (or in?) the glass (Plex?)... I asked Eric, our Curator of Design, about it (he'd seen this before) and we are looking into it to have more details. It is a very cool gallery case...
