England is not known for its gastronomy. Yet, there are a few things that are quite edible in this country and amongst them: bangers and mash. As luck would have it, I absolutely love bangers (sausages) and mash (mashed potatoes) and there is a restaurant that caters specifically to B&M lovers. It’s called the S&M Café… I guess the word “sausage” is more politically correct these days.
You will find bangers and mash at pretty much any pub in the UK; however, they usually serve just one kind of sausages and, half the time, the mash is a bit lumpy. Not at the S&M Café. My friend Katie introduced me to this fabulous little place last week and I loved it. There are numerous types of sausages available (including vegetarian ones) and the mash is the creamiest on the planet. You can even get stuff in it-cheese, for example. I like mine plain. It just goes so well with the brown gravy with onions. Or a side of mushy peas (think very, very thick French Canadian pea soup). Yummy.
Apparently, they just renovated (or perhaps changed management) because Katie and Derek said it looked different from the last time they ate there. However, it tasted really good, especially after a cold rainy day in Cambridge, visiting the university and doing research at the Fitzwilliam Museum.
It’s making me hungry just to think about it. Perhaps I should have a cup of tea…
