Friends of African and African American Art

The Friends of African and African American Art was organized in 2001 to encourage public participation in Museum programming and to assist the Museum in acquiring works by African and African American artists. FAAAA hosts events and educational opportunities in conjunction with the Museum’s collection of African and African American art. In addition to fundraising for art acquisition, activities include dinners, tours of exhibitions, behind-the-scenes seminars, day trips, and cultural performances at the Museum and other venues in the Triangle area. Friends of Greek Art

The Friends of Greek Art was formed in 2003 by a group dedicated to raising funds for acquisition of classical art and enhancing the Museum’s classical program. The Museum’s exquisite classical collection forms a visual link between ancient history and the present.

This group commitment to continuing the excellence of the collection and increasing the Museum’s ability to share the classical legacy with its audience is one that has been embraced by the Greek community and beyond. Holding events across the state—including dinners, receptions, and wine-tastings—the group has introduced the Museum’s needs to a host of North Carolina Greek communities.

Friends of the Judaic Art Gallery

The NCMA is one of only two American art museums with a dedicated gallery for Jewish ceremonial art. The Friends of the Judaic Art Gallery supports acquisition of art objects, as well as conservation and education related to this collection. Since its founding in 2001, FJAG has raised awareness throughout the state by sponsoring lectures and outreach initiatives to churches and other communities of faith. FJAG also raises funds toward the purchase of Jewish ceremonial art for the Museum’s Judaic Art Gallery.

Friends of Photography

Formed in 2006, the Friends of Photography supports photography acquisitions, exhibitions, and related programs for the Museum. Working with the curator of contemporary art, the group selects and funds contemporary photography acquisitions for the permanent collection. In addition to annual Museum membership, members give a donation each year to the Friends of Photography fund. The annual funds are dedicated to photography acquisitions for the Museum. The group also sponsors exhibitions and photography-related programs at the Museum. Additional events include lectures; visits to photographers’ studios, galleries, and members’ collections; and trips to art fairs and other museums.

Contemporaries

The Contemporaries—a group of 20- and 30-somethings—supports the Museum and increases membership by sponsoring social, educational, and fundraising events. A board of volunteers guides the group and plans events throughout the year, including special exhibition parties, gallery visits, concerts, wine tastings, an annual Derby Day party, and more. Membership in this group is $15 per person in addition to Museum membership.

Connoisseurs

Created for members age 40 and up, the Connoisseurs offer social events including dinners, gallery talks, and tours. The Connoisseurs have a group of dedicated members who act as ambassadors for the Museum and actively recruit friends and members of the community to join. They also consult with Museum staff about program ideas and how the group can support the institution. Membership is $20 per person in addition to Museum membership.
