Exhibition Description
Common Ground brings together more than 100 works of artprimarily photography but also painting, sculpture, mixed media and installationsthat explore the universal human experiences of struggle, transcendence and salvation. Drawn from the collection of Julia J. Norrell, the exhibition illustrates the essential ties that unite people of all cultures, irrespective of politics, race, ethnicity or religion.
Contents
Common Ground presents more than 100 works of art by more than 100 artists. Featured artists include Brassaï, Shimon Attie, Margaret Bourke-White, Beverly Buchanan, William Christenberry, Roy DeCarava, David Driskell, William Eggleston, Walker Evans, Jim Goldberg, Edward Grazda, Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, Jacob Lawrence, Whitfield Lovell, Deborah Luster, Richard Misrach, Gordon Parks, Addison Scurlock, Ben Shahn, Malick Sidibé, Renée Stout, James VanDerZee, Roman Vishniac, Carrie Mae Weems, Eudora Welty, Fred Wilson and many others.

Group Tours
Guided tours for student and adult groups of 10 or more are offered and must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance. Maximum group size is limited to 30. Tours are scheduled on the hour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. School groups are also admitted free for self-guided visits to exhibitions; reservations for self-guided school group visits must be made at least 10 days in advance. “One Big Self”
Sunday, May 21, 2 p.m.
Artist Deborah Luster will lecture on her ongoing photography project “One Big Self: Prisoners of Louisiana,” which focuses on portraits of prison inmates. Work from this project appears in Common Ground.

A 208-page catalogue, published by Merrell, accompanies the exhibition and is available from the Museum Store.

Blue Ridge, the Museum Restaurant
Offers an innovative menu of contemporary American cuisine. The restaurant is open TuesdayFriday, 11:30 a.m.2 p.m.; Friday nights from 5:30 p.m.10 p.m. (Last seating is 8:30 p.m.); Saturday brunch, 11:30 a.m.2 p.m.; and Sunday brunch, 10:30 a.m.2:30 p.m.
