EDUCATION Adults | Children and Families | Students | Teachers | Across the State | Library | Learning Center Hours | Online Catalogue | Other NC Art Libraries The Art Reference Library of the North Carolina Museum of Art is a research collection serving the staff of the Museum; it is also open to the public. At the core of the collection is the library of William R. Valentiner, the first director of the Museum. Gifts from a later director, Justus Bier, also enriched the early growth of the Library. The Library's emphasis is on Western European and American art, in support of the Museum's primary collections. The Library holds approximately 37,000 volumes, including books, auction and exhibition catalogs, and approximately 100 current periodical subscriptions. A publications exchange program with 100 museums worldwide augments the collection. Books added since 1980 are included in the online public access catalog, which is part of the OPAC of the State Library of North Carolina. Periodical holdings and on-order records are not included. Other resources not in the OPAC include the Artists File (a vertical file which includes North Carolina artists), material from the John Levy Galleries in New York (also available on microfilm from the Archives of American Art), auction catalogs, and some NCMA publications and archival material. Inquiries may be directed to the NCMA Art Reference Library staff at (919) 664-6769 or 664-6770.
Library materials do not circulate, but a photocopier is available. Staff will assist patrons by searching online and resources such as the library catalogs, the Inventory of American Painting and Sculpture, the Bibliography of the History of Art, RILA and RAA, and Art Abstracts. Information on paintings in the collection currently on view also is available for consultation. Information is also provided by telephone; the Art Reference Librarian may be reached at (919) 664-6769. Online Catalog The online catalog includes books and exhibition catalogs added since 1980. Pre-1980 holdings may be located using the card catalog.
