Middle East, possibly Yemen

Bridal Belt, 19th century
Silver: filigree, partially gilt L 29-1/8 in. (74.0 cm.); W 1-1/2 in. (3.8 cm.)
Gift of Elizabeth F. Gervais-Gruen in honor of the marriage of her son Robert A. Gruen, 95.11

Marriage is one of the important steps in the Jewish life cycle. The ceremony is performed under a canopy, symbolic of the first roof under which the couple will live together. The marriage ceremony is rich in ritual and highlighted by the reading of th e marriage contract and the presentation of a ring, both of which are also represented in the Museum's collection.

Sometimes the wedding gifts include a ceremonial belt for the bride. Although not exclusively Jewish, such adornments symbolize womanhood.
