Jewish artisans created containers for the spices sniffed in the ceremony marking the conclusion of the Sabbath. The forms of the containers vary by region. Many European spice containers are in the form of towers. In the Middle East and eastern Europe other forms are of fruit and fanciful beasts or eggs.
