20 Feet from Stardom is a new documentary that spotlights the fabulous female backup singers who lend their voices to the greatest musical acts in the world. The movie won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
The NCMA is thrilled to present a rare concert experience featuring one of the luminaries of 20 Feet from Stardom, Lisa Fischer, in a live performance preceding the film.
If you’ve attended a Rolling Stones concert in the past 25 years, you’ve seen and heard Lisa Fischer and will remember her powerhouse duet with Mick Jagger on “Gimme Shelter.” She blossomed under the tutelage of Luther Vandross and went on to work with a jaw-dropping list of performers in addition to the Rolling Stones: Sting, Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé, Alicia Keyes, Tina Turner, Nine Inch Nails, and Chris Botti, to name a few. A massive talent with a magnetic personality, Lisa won a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Performance.
Hats off to Morgan Neville, the director of 20 Feet from Stardom, for giving Lisa and her peers the chance to take center stage.
Durham rising jazz star Shana Tucker introduces Lisa Fischer.
“Sheer perfection! Just watch Morgan Neville’s exhilarating documentary and try not to stand up and cheer.”—Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
“Infectious and irresistible. Their voices are powerful enough to tear you apart and put you back together again, and their stories will do the same.”—Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
