The continuation of an epic about the subversion of the American Dream, Part II won the Best Picture Oscar, as did the original The Godfather. Coppola said: “I didn’t want to go the easy way, which would be just to continue the story of Michael . . . I decided to make a film about a man obsessed with his father’s success on the eve of his own failure.”
