On October 21 the Museum opens Still-Life Masterpieces: A Visual Feast from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Still life as a genre saw its heyday in Flemish and Dutch art of the 16th and 17th centuries. Artists such as Pieter Claesz, Willem C. Heda, and Jan Weenix created opulent pieces depicting floral arrangements, an abundance of food, and decorative objects that reflected a prospering society. They also showed off new artistic skills and techniques with dazzling treatment of light, reflections, materials, and textures. Still life also had a significant moralistic component, exemplified by the notion of vanitas. This lecture provides an overview of the genre and highlights several paintings from the exhibition.
