The NCMA offers occasional musical performances staged in the beautiful galleries of West Building. Rather than formal concerts requiring seating and strict attention, these performances are meant to enhance your enjoyment of the works of art as you stroll the galleries.
In celebration of the exhibition El Anatsui: When Last I Wrote to You about Africa, renowned Senegalese kora player and percussionist Diali Cissokho performs in West Building near Anatsui’s stunning wall sculpture Lines That Link Humanity. Diali was born into a rich ancestry of Manding griots (the musician caste) and has been playing traditional West African music for as long as he can remember. After years of teaching in Senegal and Europe, he recently resettled in North Carolina, where he performs with his group Kairaba. While his greatest love is the kora, the 21-stringed African harp that represents the heart and soul of much West African music, Diali is also a wonderful singer, percussionist, and dancer.
