Lecture: Looking at African Art in the 21st Century
Sunday, February 19 | 2:30 pmEast Building | Museum Auditorium
Free | Ticket from Box Office required
In this presentation Dr. Rebecca Martin Nagy, director of the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida and former curator of African art and associate director of education at the NCMA, grapples with the challenge of how to look at, reflect on, and talk about the rapidly evolving and dynamic field of African art. At the Harn Museum of Art she has guided the growth of the African collection to include works in a variety of media and from cultures ranging from Ethiopia to South Africa and from Ghana to Somalia.
The NCMA’s African collection, handsomely installed in the new West Building, provides an excellent context for talking about African art in all of its richness, variety, complexity, and beauty. Nagy knows the collection well, since many of the works on view were acquired during her time here.
