Reviewed as “attention-holding and ultimately moving” and “profound in its vision of humanity, religion, and art,” this 1972 novel by Chaim Potok is considered a modern classic. The plot concerns one Asher Lev, who struggles to reconcile his love of art and the drive to create it with his identity as a Hasidic Jew, intensely dedicated to family and religious orthodoxy. Torn between his loyalties to God and his imagination, Lev personifies the depths of creative hunger and double consciousness, particularly as they relate to the modern artist.
