Flip-Book Flights
Saturday, February 21, 2004
1–3 p.m.
Ages 11–14
$15 ($12)
Students view videos in the exhibition Defying Gravity to see how contemporary artists capture the effects of flying. Participants create their own illusions of flying through drawings of airborne characters in moving picture flip books.

Flight Patterns: The Spirit Can Soar
Friday, April 30, 1 pm and 7 pm
Museum Auditorium, Free
Meredith College faculty and students collaborate on a one-hour performance incorporating video, dance, music and narration honoring the late artist Michael Richards, whose powerful sculpture Tar Baby vs. St. Sebastian is in Defying Gravity.

Guided Tours
Book your guided tour early. Docent-led guided tours are offered for groups of 10 or more, Wednesday through Friday, by contacting the Museum’s tour coordinator at (919) 839-6262, ext. 2144, three weeks in advance. Guided tours for school groups are free with reservations four weeks in advance. Self-guided school groups are free with reservations two weeks in advance.

With the purchase of an exhibition ticket, take a free docent-led tour of the exhibition especially for families.

Adult Discover Tours

With the purchase of an exhibition ticket, take a free docent-led tour of the exhibition for adults.

Tea-Time Tours for Seniors
First Wednesdays starting November 5
2 p.m., Museum Galleries and Education Lobby
Free, Must register at least one week in advance
Meet in Education Lobby.
The NCMA is pleased to offer Tea-Time Tours to all interested seniors the first Wednesday of each month. The program includes a docent-led tour of the galleries followed by light refreshments in the Education Lobby with informal discussion of the Museum and its collection. Space is limited. Defying Gravity Senior Tours
Wednesday, February 11
Enjoy a free, docent-led tour of Defying Gravity with the purchase of a senior ticket ($6). Tours begin at 11 A.M. Reservations must be made through the Museum Box Office one week in advance by calling (919) 715-5923.

First Flight Events in the Triangle and Beyond

N.C. Museum of History Pioneers of Aviation, July 29, 2003–May 29, 2005, Free
Orville Wright's inaugural flight at Kill Devil Hills on December 17, 1903, launched the age of aviation. This exhibit celebrates this monumental event and highlights other Tar Heel aviators and aviation innovators. Visit

N.C. Museum of History Lindbergh, November 8, 2003–February 1, 2004. Free
The Missouri Historical Society developed this traveling exhibition to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Charles A. Lindbergh's historic 1927 transatlantic flight. See approximately 400 artifacts related to Lindbergh, his flight and the celebrity that grew out of his accomplishments. Raleigh City Museum Planes, Trains and Automobiles: Transportation in the Triangle. October 4, 2003–Summer 2005, Raleigh City Museum
Explores the history of transportation in the Raleigh area from the earliest modes of travel to the advent of the railroad, the airplane and the automobile. Photographs, oral history and a catalogue are included. Visit www.raleighcitymuseum.org for details.
