About the one-night installation
David Solow of Rougemont, North Carolina, will create a temporary installation, runway, that will be on view only on Friday, March 5 from 5 9 pm. His installation of luminaries will replicate a runway across the grounds of the Museum with several hundred candles. The lights will sweep across the driveway up to the front of the entrance of the Museum and then continue across the lawn behind the Museum, up the hill, and through the pasture. This glowing, ephemeral landing strip or runway is based on a grid of nine perfectly straight lines, leading from point to point, "as the crow flies."
Airline Tickets Giveaway
Those attending Defying Gravity may enter a drawing for two U.S. Airways tickets to be held after the show closes in March. At the Flight Store, you will see a special area where you can register to win. The lucky winner will be notified after March 8, 2004. The NCMA gratefully acknowledges U.S. Airways for their support and for this donation of tickets to any city served by the airline in the continental United States.

Into the Blue Celebration
The theme of flight offered the Museum the dramatic opportunity to integrate visitors of all ages into the Museum experience. Presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Into the Blue commemorates flight through concerts, films, family events, workshops, lectures and more. Teacher Resources
The Education Department has created "Flight Plans" to help schools and families get the most out of Defying Gravity and Into the Blue. Flight Plans include biographies of selected artists from the exhibition, ideas for fun and educational activities in classrooms and homes, a series of lesson plans for school courses, reading lists, exhibition information and links to additional resources. The lesson plans are available in other media for classrooms across the state. Prepared by Sharon Hill, an art educator at Meredith College, the lesson plans include three different units for 4th and 8th graders, as well as high-school students. Materials, including slide programs, are distributed without charge to any school in North Carolina through the Education Department's lending service at (919) 839-6262, ext. 2144.
