Edvard Munch was an active and astute consumer of popular culture. In his art he drew upon new opportunities in European social and material culture, including the mobility offered by the tourism and travel industries, opportunities for promotion and self-presentation in print media, and new technologies of production and reproduction. This talk by Patricia Berman, the Theodora L. and Stanley H. Feldberg Professor of Art at Wellesley College, explores some of these activities, using works in the Munch exhibition as springboards for exploration.
